CELPE-BRAS

The Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language for Foreigners (Celpe-Bras) is the official exam administered by the Brazilian government to certify proficiency in Portuguese as a foreign language. It is the only internationally recognized certificate of proficiency in the Portuguese language.

Foreign diplomats assigned to Brazil and expatriates may be required to obtain a Celpe-Bras certificate by their respective home authorities. Holding a Celpe-Bras certificate is also required for applicants who wish to study in Brazil. Additionally, the Celpe-Bras is a prerequisite for those seeking Brazilian permanent residency or citizenship.

The exam is held twice a year. Internationally, it takes place in selected Brazilian Embassies, which includes IGR Pretoria, located at the Embassy of Brazil in South Africa.

Celpe-Bras is divided into two sections: written and oral. The written section assesses listening comprehension through video and audio exercises and requires written production, while the oral section involves a 20-minute in-person interview with an examiner.

The exam provides certification at four levels of proficiency:

  • Intermediate
  • Upper Intermediate
  • Advanced
  • Upper Advanced

Please note that there are no Basic/Initial levels, and candidates who do not achieve any of these levels will not receive a certificate.

To help candidates prepare for the exam, IGR Pretoria offers a Preparatory Course. This course, while highly recommended, is optional.
